Sougwen Chung started crating art with AI robots because she was very interested in how her artistic process would develop with a non human collaborator.

Chung builds all her AI robots. Her latest is Doug 4 which stands for Drawing, Operations Unit, Generation Four which connects to her brainwave data. This enables Doug 4 to paint or draw spontaneously to Chungs visual and movement clues

Chung calls her work "embodied AI". By that she means that the robots respond to her movements and she responds to the robots'.

She calls her robots 'her collaborators' because they don't copy the human creative process but are not just reproducing data either.

The AI robots can interpret and make their own designs by responding to Chung's brushstrokes. This creates improvised art instead of programed art.

Chung loves the performance aspect of her work. "I wanted to bring the body back into the creative process, the muscle memory and gesture that were missing from my practice, and that energy you create with the audience."
